The dreams of its founding fathers took shape in 1984 in the form of Shanmugha College of engineering which is now renamed, Shanmugha Arts, Science, Technology & Research Academy (SASTRA). It has carved a niche for itself as a centre for fostering and developing the body, mind and spirit of its students. SASTRA is totally committed to this three-fold flowering of the students entrusted to its care. A sprawling campus housing a built-up area of over 30, 00,000 sq.ft and a vibrant population of over 10,000 students and over 700 teaching faculty have made SASTRA a landmark in the educational map of India.

Srinivasa Ramanujan Centre (SRC) was inaugurated in November 2000 by Prof. V. S. Ramamurthy, Secretary, Department of Science and Technology, Government of India. Besides offering various degree programmes, the centre has established a National monument for the Mathematical Genius, Srinivasa Ramanujan. This centre was established to provide quality higher education to the people of Kumbakonam and nearby places. Srinivasa Ramanujan Centre is a magnificent edifice decorating the historic town of Kumbakonam.
This massive six storied structure houses modern classrooms, a state-of-the-art computer laboratory, engineering and science laboratories, air-conditioned auditorium and library. SRC also has a museum on Ramanujan’s life and work. On 20th December 2003, the former President of India, His Excellency Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, dedicated to Nation SRC and also the house in which Ramanujan lived in Kumbakonam, was purchased and maintained by SASTRA as an International Monument. His Excellency also declared open the Srinivasa Ramanujan house of Mathematics (a museum on Srinivasa Ramanujan).
Based on the recommendations of a high-level committee appointed by the University Grants Commission (UGC), the Government of India, Srinivasa Ramanujan Centre, established by SASTRA wasdeclared an OFF-CAMPUS CENTRE under the ambit of SASTRA Deemed University.
SASTRA-Ramanujan Award
SASTRA has instituted an annual award of US$ 10,000/- and a citation to be presented for outstanding research in the areas influenced by Srinivasa Ramanujan. The award is open to researchers under the age of 32 all over the world. This award has been instituted to encourage young minds to pursue cutting edge researching onmathematical applications influenced by Ramanujan and increase the visibility of mathematics both at the national and global level. The award for 2005 was given to two young Indians Dr.Manjul Bhargava, the University of Princeton and Dr. Kannan Soundararajan, University of Michigan. SASTRA gave away two individual awards of $10,000/-each. Dr. Terence Tao, Professor of Mathematics, University of California, Los Angeles was the winner of the award for the year 2006.The award for 2007 was given to Dr. Ben Green, Hershell Smith Professor of Mathematics, Cambridge University, England. The award for 2008 was given to Dr.Akshay Venkatesh, Professor of Mathematics, Stanford University, USA. The award for 2009 was given to Prof. KatherinBringman of Cologne University, Germany. The award for 2010 was given to Prof. Wei Zhang, Harvard University, USA. The award for 2011 was given to Dr. Roman Holowinsky, Ohio State University, USA. The award for 2012 was given to Prof. Zhiwei Yun, MIT, USA on 22nd December 2012 at Delhi in the presence of Shri JitinPrasada, State Minister HRD. The award for 2013 was given to Prof. Peter Scholze, University of Bonn, Germany. The award for 2014 was given to Prof. James Maynard, Oxford University, England & University of Montreal, Canada. The award for 2015 was given to Dr. Jacob Tsimerman, University of Toronto, Canada. The award for 2016 was given to Dr.KaisaMatomaki, University of Turku, Finland and Dr. Maksym Radiziwill, Mc Gill University, Canada. The award for 2017 was given to Dr. Maryna Viazovska, Department of Mathematics, Ecole Polytechnique, and Federable Lausanne, Switzerland.
